Sweet Spot & NEW SITE

The New Site Is Up And It's A Dot CO! VoicesFromTheCommunity.co

This show is made up of ALL independent music and each time I work on a show, I do all that I can to find music that moves me in such a way that I would want to share it with you.

Welcome to Voices From The Community, two hours of jazz and international music that I lovingly designed to soothe the soul and stimulate the mind for all those lovers of jazz who aren't afraid to experience something new. Be sure to pay close attention to the music by Revolution Void.

I think I found a sweet spot! Independent music that is.

Beware The Fisherman

Last week, Andrew finished designing my new Voices From The Community website and man did it look pretty snazzy. Our agreement was simple, he builds a FREE site and if I like it, I spread the word about his services. After seeing how great the site was, I was more than happy to tell my friends and did so in last week’s post. Little did I know, he was really a fisherman.

Phys.Org
You know what most fishermen do don’t you? They throw a baited hook out into the water and sit patiently until they get a bite. Well, I bit and man, did he reel me in with the quickness. He designed this beautiful website and I was very excited. As I began to wiggle off the hook so I could launch the site with my preferred host, he quickly grabbed me and tried to feed me more bait in the form of using his preferred host.

You see, he fishes for people, hooks you on the design and reels you in by getting you to choose his preferred host over any other. Should you decide to go with another host, jump off the hook, he kindly sends you certain files that will reveal only a portion of your new site. When you bring this to his attention, he will claim that the files must have gotten corrupted during your host’s install process. He of course is ready to build the site again for FREE, but wait, he more than likely already has all the real files and he will convince you that you need to use his host so this doesn’t happen a second time.

I created Voices From The Community as a way to lift up voices that often go unheard. Some use music to express themselves while soothing the soul and stimulating the mind of the listener. Others use spaces like this to share stories that raise awareness, including warning you about the fishermen, or to simply provide a platform for others. My plan is to do both while navigating the waters safely.

Talk to you soon.

Diversity Tile Quilt

Diversity Tile Quilt
Appalachian State University

When we’re cold we often reach for something warm to wrap around us. For some, loving arms are enough to dismiss the onset of a chill, and for others, a quilt stitched with love warms the heart and soothes the soul entirely.

In June of this year, a soothes the soul kind of quilt was on exhibit outside the dean’s office at Appalachian State University, one that imparted a message of “unity amongst differences” by representing the diverse cultures that exist in the region. When I saw this Diversity Tile Quilt, appropriately named and sewn in a “friendship pattern” layout, I thought about the true meaning of community in the way that each patch represents an honest form of communication from a particular group or culture. As each patch was sewn together, I imagined hearing voices declare their commitment to strengthen the bond between them while working together to comfort and ease the conditions of others, including the cold that often exists within.

I'm forming a team of volunteers who will be sewn together, no not literally, to support the upcoming visit of Prometheus Radio Project on December 16 and 17. Charlotte is the last stop on their Reclaim The Airwaves Tour and the to-do list could be completed in short order if I had a few extra hands. Contact me if you want to learn more and/or have time to help with any of these items:
  • Launch/build a community radio station.
  • Apply for the LPFM license.
  • Design a flyer and/or poster specific to the tour.
  • Design a sign-up and/or "I'm interested in..." page on our new site.
  • Create and execute a Social Media plan for Facebook & Twitter to promote the tour, etc.
  • Find Charlotte home stays for Jeff Rousset & Steph McGuinness.
  • Help to uncover paid speaking events at a nearby college/university/learning center.
Talk to you soon.

Break Time Is Over!

Time to reconnect and fill you in on what I've been up to these last two months.Yikes!

Ignite Charlotte 5 took up the majority of my mental energy and now we’re tidying up the graphics on the videotaped talks. The next newsletter will feature the speakers and their talks, while thanking all who attended, sponsored, and volunteered their time to make the event a great success. A BIG THANKS to everyone in advance.

In the past two weeks, Andrew Miller, a web designer I met through a LinkedIn group, took time to design the layout for the Voices From The Community website. I’ll do the big reveal after the content is finished. While you wait, review Andrew’s services at acmwebs.net and tell him Bridget B. sent you. Woot!

Two days ago, I spoke with Jeff Rousset, National Organizer for Prometheus Radio Project, and we discussed the upcoming Reclaim The Airwaves TourI’m happy to announce that I will be assisting Prometheus Radio Project with their Charlotte visit on December 16 and 17. More specifically, I will serve as their Charlotte event host at a location to be determined.

The primary objective of the Reclaim The Airwaves Tour is "to support social justice and community groups [that want] to seize the airwaves and build power with community radio." Now that break time is over, I’m jumping in with both feet to work on details surrounding your ability to get involved with this effort here in Charlotte. Specific details will be featured in next week’s blog.

Talk to you soon.
